What is Sustainable Development?

"Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the current generation without compromising the needs of the future generations."

In the summer of 2018, I traveled to India to study sustainable development and social entrepreneurship. To see what I learned, click the presentation or publication link below!

Areas of Sustainable Development

1. Energy/Power - enables human connection and allows for worldwide transfer of information. Energy powers our home appliances and enables the interconnection of the World Wide Web. Without energy you would not be able to gain access to this website or be able to call your loved ones who live across the World!

2. Water -  access to clean drinking water to sustain ourselves; access to clean water for washing ourselves, dishes, and clothes; plumbing is necessary for sanitary waste. Water is essential for human, plant, and animal life.

3. Waste management -  important to sort (landfill, compost, recycle); sorting allows for items to be repurposed. In more recent years, people have been intentional about sorting mechanisms to try to reduce the overall amount of waste that humans produce because there are problems with where to dispose of waste.

4. Food & Agriculture - how we nourish ourselves; how our bodies maintain energy. Having access to food whether it's growing your own or being able to purchase from the grocery store is critical for human development.

5. Transportation - getting around whether by walking, biking, public transportation, car, rail, or air - transportation is essential to modern life. The future of transportation, in my opinion, is more walking + biking + public transportation and less driving (especially gas powered vehicles)

These are not the only aspects of sustainable development! , Refer to the United Nations 17 Sustainability Goals to learn more about the priorities of sustainable development.
